This Framed Squares quilt is made with a layer cake, and a super easy pattern that is perfect for beginners because it doesn’t have any small pieces to sew. I loved the way it turned out. It’s bright, colorful, and came together in one arternoon.
In case you are unfamiliar with quilting lingo, a layer cake is is a sewing term used for a collection of 10-inch squares of fabric (usually 42 squares in a package), grouped together by color family, pattern, or design line. They are usually sold at quilt shops and online. There are tons of different fabrics to choose from. This is an example of what they looks like in the package:
The pattern is simple:
- Cut two 2¼” x 10″ strips from the sides.
- Then cut two 2¼” x 5 1/2″ from the top and bottom.
- You will be left with a 5 1/2 x 5 1/2″ square.
- Mix and match the frames with the middle squares. Be adventurous in your selection.
Here are some tips:
- You can cut several layers at once by stacking them, six at a time.
- Arrange the squares before sewing to be sure that you don’t have the same color next to each other.
- Sew in rows, then sew the rows together.
- I hand-quilted this, but you can tie or machine quilt. It took me about two-weeks of quilting while watching television in the evenings.
